To all men living and working hard in Japan—have you ever worried about any of these situations?
- “Am I causing discomfort to coworkers on crowded trains or in the office due to sweat or body odor?”
- “I wore my favorite cologne, but people around me reacted strangely (known as ‘Scent Harassment’ in Japan).”
- “I want to look clean and handsome in Japanese society, but I don’t know which grooming products actually work.”
In Japanese culture, wearing heavy perfume to mask odor is often frowned upon. Instead, the key to success is “Seiketsukan” (清潔感)—a concept centered around subtle freshness, healthy skin, groomed hair, and clean clothing.
In this guide, we introduce top-rated items from PROUDMEN, a premium grooming brand beloved by Japanese businessmen, to help you stay fresh and confident every single day!
💡 3 Golden Rules of “Seiketsukan” in Japan:
- Subtle Citrus Scent over Heavy Cologne: A light, clean scent that lingers naturally when passing by.
- Target Odor at the Source: Use medicated scalp and body care to eliminate bacteria before odor starts.
- Maintain Hair & Skin: Dry skin and messy hair project a tired, unkempt impression.
1. [Scalp & Hair Care] Medicated Scalp Shampoo & Pack Conditioner
If you wear a helmet/cap or notice oiliness and scalp odor by the end of the day, this set is your solution. Formulated with medicated active ingredients, it washes away excess sebum and prevents itchiness and dandruff while leaving a refreshing Grooming Citrus scent.
2. [Body Care] Medicated Grooming Body Wash
Highly recommended for active men, those who sweat easily, or anyone concerned about body odor and back acne. Active antibacterial ingredients eliminate odor-causing bacteria directly, giving you a fresh, clean shower experience that lasts throughout the day.
3. [Sweat Protection] Medicated Deodorant Roll-On
Underarm sweat stains and odors are a major concern in crowded trains or office spaces. Apply this compact roll-on in the morning before stepping out to keep underarms dry and odor-free all day long.
4. [Fabric Deodorant] PROUDMEN Suit Refresher Strong
Suits, winter coats, and work jackets can’t be washed daily. Spray this on your outerwear after work or izakaya dining to instantly eliminate tobacco, food, and sweat odors while leaving a sophisticated citrus aroma that acts as a subtle alternative to cologne.
5. [Solid Fragrance] PROUDMEN Grooming Balm
Solve the problem of liquid colognes being too overwhelming in Japanese workplaces. This solid balm can be dabbed behind the ears or wrists, giving off an intimate, refreshing scent that is only noticeable when standing close. Portable and easy to reapply before meetings or dates.
6. [Skin Hydration] Grooming Water & Hand Cream
Japan’s dry autumn/winter weather and air-conditioned rooms dry out men’s skin. Dry, rough skin projects an unkempt image. Use Grooming Water for whole-body hydration after showers, and Hand & Skin Cream to keep hands and face hydrated and smooth.
7. [Hair Styling] Fragrance Hard Wax
In Japanese business culture, well-styled hair signals professionalism and cleanliness. This hard wax provides strong hold without feeling overly sticky, washes out easily, and imparts a light, refreshing aroma throughout the day.
Conclusion: Master “Seiketsukan” for Success in Japan!
To build trust and leave a memorable positive impression in Japan, replace heavy fragrances with subtle grooming, proper skincare, and clean attire.
